Building #TheNewHomeroom
As the COVID-19 global pandemic closed our classrooms and put us in collective uncertainty, we began designing a process for building community and grounding ourselves in the values we hold as educators. Led by the work of Autumn Troullos (middle school math teacher and Fluency Cohort 4 member) and Jess Kaminsky (CREATE Lab team), we created a three part workshop inspired by the writing of Arundhati Roy's "The Pandemic Is a Portal." The workshop series is designed around a series of questions - What did we let go of? What did we make space to embrace? What are our values? How will we enact these values in our teaching and learning communities? Through this process, the group works in small teams and collectively to generate a list of values they hold and actions that will evidence these values.
Over 100 educators and community members from Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania have participated in this work. You can read some of the lists that have been created on the Fluency blog here, here, and here.
